Plaza las Delicias, Ponce, Puerto Rico

Las Delicias Plaza is located at the center of the Ponce Historic Zone. It is a well liked place to visit because there you will find three very popular places of interest. They are: Las Delicias Plaza, The Parque de Bombas de Ponce (Old Ponce Fire Station) and the Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe Cathedral.

This elegant Las Delicias Plaza is divided in two sections in view of the fact that Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe Cathedral is located in its center. Nowadays, the north wing is known as the Plaza Luis Muñoz Rivera in honor of the poet, journalist and politician born in Barranquitas, P.R. The south wing is known as the Plaza Federico Degetau y González, in memory of the writer, lawyer, last Deputy to the Spanish Courts and first Resident Commissioner of Puerto Rico in Washington DC..

Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe Cathedral was named in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mexico. Our Lady of Guadalupe is also the Patron Saint of Ponce and the devotion comes from Mexico.

In 1670, there was already a small chapel in the area where the plaza is currently located. This chapel was closed in 1820, due to its state of deterioration. The construction of the new temple began fifteen years later, after demolishing the old one.

In 1918, an earthquake caused damages to the towers and other parts of the structure. The reconstruction of the church with the current façade, took place from 1931 to 1937. In 1924, by ordained of Pope Pius XI, it was declared a cathedral.  Since then it is one of the five cathedrals of Puerto Rico.

The Firehouse Museum was built in 1882 to serve as the main pavilion of the Fair Exhibition held in Ponce in July 1882. It has undergone very few changes to its original design. The Museum preserves photographs, documents, tools and other artifacts of historic value. Today, it serves as a symbol to honor and commemorate Ponce’s firemen.
